Phillip Spencer
Meteorologist
Stormscale Research and Applications Division
National Severe Storms Laboratory
NOAA Environmental Research Laboratories in Norman, OK

Phillip Spencer received his B.S. degree in 1989 and his M.S. degree in 1991 both in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. In the fall of 1998, he began attending Penn State University in pursuit of a Ph.D.

Spencer's interests include synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, the study of weather systems which range from 100 km to 1000 km in size. He also enjoys researching techniques to examine/manipulate the data on such systems intelligently. In addition, he has performed simulations of flash flood events using a numerical model.

"During a typical day, the first thing that I do is to look at weather maps, radar images, satellite photos, and numerical model guidance to see what the weather is currently doing and to determine what the weather might be like for the next few days. That helps me plan any outdoor activities that I might have. After that, it's time to get busy on whatever project(s) I might be working on. Much of this time involves writing computer code, running a numerical model (to simulate weather events) and interpreting its results, or reading journal articles that relate to my current project(s) or those that are just plain interesting."

Phillip's main hobbies include exercise (running, walking, weight training, basketball, etc.), photographing storms or anything else that catches his eye, and cheering for the OU Sooners.
