Project Competition: Categories

Agriculture and Biology
Includes projects concerning agricultural sciences, botany, zoology, or entomology. Examples include growing degree days, animal behavior, insect behavior, or vegetation growth patterns.

Behavioral Sciences
Includes projects concerning human behavior, such as how weather affects human behavior.

Climatology
Includes projects concerning climate patterns. Examples include comparing data to climatological "normal" or exploring major meteorological features such as El Niño.

Forecasting
Includes projects concerning forecasts, both long-term (>10 days) and short-term (<10 days). Examples include validation of forecasts and testing forecasting methods.

Moisture
Includes projects concerning precipitation, clouds, dew point, and relative humidity. Examples include predicting cloud cover, or examining the behavior of water, smog, fog, and frost.

Soil Temperature
Includes projects concerning soil temperature. Examples include effects of the atmosphere on soil temperatures, comparison of air and soil temperatures, and heat retention by soil.

Solar Radiation
Includes projects concerning solar heating, solar energy, and solar radiation. Examples include solar radiation vs. temperature, or how much solar energy is needed to melt snow or lift a balloon.

Standard Weather Parameters
Includes projects concerning pressure, temperature, and wind. Examples include how temperature affects pressure, predicting the wind, or building your own thermometer, barometer, or anemometer.

Technology and Economics
Includes projects concerning technology and/or economical factors involving science. Examples include computers, architecture, photography, instrumentation, airplanes, home insulation, and heat loss.

Weather Systems
Includes projects concerning specific meteorological features, such as cold fronts, air masses, tornadoes, or thunderstorms.
